Density/Pattern/Age and relationships:

The way that we explored the settlement density and pattern is through examining it in a period where major infrastructural works happened. That period is before and after 1980's where the railway between Manchester and Liverpool was built and also the Manchester ship canal opened. The settlements show a significant change in the scale and the distribution of them and they strongly relate to the opening of the ship canal and the railway.

Settlement (Overall distribution and types)

The settlement types were separated into two categories in this map ,city or large urban area and small urban areas. The coastal areas and the river are purposely shown as they played a very important in the development of those settlements. The way that those settlement types are distributed in the map suggesting that the urban areas were developed following the industries on the sites and then due to population growth, the smaller urban areas were built as an expansion of the large ones.
