EUROPEAN LEGISLATION

 

Habitat Directive 1992
Habitat Directive 1992 (94/43/EEC on conservation of natural habitat of wild fauna and flora) aims to protect a range of listed species and habitats considered to be of European interest. It contributes towards ensuring biodiversity. Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) together with Special Protection Area (SPAs) form a network of protected sites across the EU.

 

European Water Directive 2000
European Water Directive establish a community-wide framework for water protection and management. The directive has number of objectives preventing and reducing pollution, promoting sustainable water usage.

 

Renewable Energy Directive 2009
Renewable Energy Directive 2009 (2009/28/EC) works towards 20% cut in emissions of greenhouse gases by 2020 compared to 1990 levels, 20% increase in the use of renewable energy by 2020 and 20% cut in energy consumption trough improved energy efficiency by 2020.

 

 

 

UK LEGISLATION

 

Planning Act 2008
Part of the act is considered with new procedures for handling applications for National Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) for energy, transport, water and waste. The planning act imposes requirements on promoters of NSIP to consult key stakeholders, affected parties and local communities prior to submitting an application and set out new process for examine it.

 

Climate Change Act 2008
The act will a range of greenhouse gases reduction target and enable UK to make the transition to a Low Carbon Economy. This act made UK the first country in the world to set legally binding ‘carbon budget’.

 

Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009
Aims to ensure clean, healthy, safe productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas by putting better systems for developing sus- tainable development. A new right of access to marine coast is also established.
